Subject 13667: Samuel

Prologue

"Kill them!"
"Kill them all!"
"Blood!"
"Make them suffer!"
"Kill the Wilds!"
Wolves of all colors, shapes, and sizes swarmed all over the clearing. The whole place, which had once resembled a camp but was now just tents and broken trees, was on fire, blazing wildly in the moonlight. Bombs exploded everywhere, and the howls of all the other Subjects filled my ears, as well as gunfire and dying shrieks: of humans as well as wolves.
"Sam!" I turned, startled, to see a black-and-white she-wolf grappling with a mastiff twice her size. He was tearing at her throat, ripping out fur and flesh, and any second now he would make the deep strike: the final one.
I howled, leaping at the mastiff, jaws already dripping with the Wilds' blood. I pounced onto the Mastiff's back, tearing at his ears with my slavering fangs. He yipped in surprise and loosened his grip, allowing the she-wolf to flee. She turned and looked expectantly at me, reflective eyes glinting in the flames' light.
"Get away from here, Fay!" I told her, baring my teeth. She dashed off into the woods, where a medic would hopefully be. I then turned to the mastiff, who was looming over me with drooling fangs.
"Traitor wolf," he growled, "you hypocrite. First you say dog forgets the Wild, and then you fight to destroy it. Make up the mind!"
"I fight to defend the Wild!" I retorted with the full force of my conviction. "I fight so that you and your masters don't destroy it with your war-making!"
"Your masters made first the war!" the dog snarled. "You come, you break tree, you kill woman, man, child, you want power, you make dead any in the way. I do not call that defending the Wild."
"You liar!" I lunged, ducking under his snout and gripping his throat in my teeth. I sunk them in and tugged back, ripping the flesh right off the mastiff's throat. Blood sprayed everywhere, and the mastiff convulsed with a shriek of terror that changed abruptly into a gurgle. He fell, and I howled.
"A blow for the pure-hearted wolf!"
Suddenly, a crushing weight landed on my back. It shoved me into the ground, and a thick voice snarled in my ear, "You know nothing of pure-heartedness, you BEAST!"
Pain exploded in my ear as the canine's fangs ripped it, and I threw all my energy into arching my spine. The jerk threw the enemy wolf off my back, and he sailed a good few feet and landed on a bush. It must've been smoldering, because he leaped up with a yelp of surprise and dashed off.
"How're we doin', Sammy?" a wolf called. I turned to see a massive, red-furred wolf leaping out of the flames towards me. He sailed straight over my head and landed on a Wild human, crushing its neck in his jaws. He leaped clear of the mangled biped and turned towards me. "Eh?"
I smiled. "Just fine, Ulf, just fine."
"Good." He grimaced. "I'd hate to think that I still have to take care of you, after all these years of 'untin these Wilds." He bounded away, howling like a demon.
I took a second to gather myself, then loped off to the left of me, sniffing, but all I smelled was smoke. I looked around. Surely there were more…?
Aha. There was a dog, her back black and her tail-tip white, a female by the look of her, waddling away from the flames with her whole coat bristling.
Slow, fat dog. This'll be easy. I  dashed at her, baying like a bloodhound. She gasped and tried to move faster, but she couldn't get away. Within seconds I was leaping for her.
I bowled her off her paws with a blow to her flank, then grabbed her shoulder in my jaws and gnawed. She howled with pain, crying and bleeding. "Please, let me go! Please! I have pups, and a mate! Please, don't kill me!"
I threw her to the ground, then, ignoring her pleas, I leaped at her again and pinned her down. She was white on the bottom, and disgustingly fat. I bared my teeth at her in contempt, and she met my gaze with supplicating blue eyes.
Ignoring her fear, I drove my fangs into her throat. She let out a choked cry as I tore back, as her blood sprayed my muzzle like a warm fountain: "Samuel!"
I gasped. How did she know my name?
Oh, Fenris!
I looked at her closely. Even with blood pouring from her throat and mouth, I knew her. I recognized her, though not in time. Those shock-blue eyes, that sleek, smooth coat, that flopped over ear…
This was Lilly. The Border Collie.
My mother.
She was dying, and I hadn't even realized it was her as I'd killed her.
And, as I looked at her, her smooth, rounded stomach, I realized she wasn't fat, but pregnant. Not only had I killed her, but lives that hadn't even tasted the world. I'd ended the beginnings.
"MOTHER!" I wailed, howling. "NO!" I'd killed her… Guilt, shame, and terror overcame me. Tears flowed from my eyes as I howled. "I'M SORRY!" I'd killed her, and her unborn cubs. I'd killed my siblings, my family. It felt like I'd killed myself. There was no way I could wreck another life like this.
Barely coherent, I screamed to the burning sky, "I'm sorry, Mother! I'll never kill another wild again!" Suddenly furious, I ripped my collar off my throat and roared, "Nyagh!" Then I lay down by my mother's body, sobbing and shaking. A few moments later, I heard voices shouting. Someone fastened a new collar around my neck and grabbed me, draping me over his shoulders. I didn't fight, as I had no fight left. I just whimpered as the unnamed human took me farther from my mother, farther from the life I'd so violently ended without a second thought.
PG-13 for blood and gore, for now at least.

Yeah... Shouldn't write past 9:30...
Anyway, enjoy! Inspired more or less by Wolf's Rain and Archerionwolf's [link] Lab Wolf. Go read it.

May do an overhaul tomorrow...
